Honestly the sooner we have fully autonomous cars the better. This growing pain in the worst part but think about things

• The ability to watch TV, eat, read, nap, work in your car if you want while it drives you places
• a safer experience due to faster reaction times
• less traffic jams and slow downs due to more coordinated timing
• better independence for the infirm and elderly (this is one I think a lot of people overlook)

Too many people are still scared at this point but overall this would be a positive step for societies. I know there are negatives (car could repossess itself or it could cart me off to jail) but we can’t always fall in the trap of “it has to be 100% right”.

Except modern DCs operate on a “lights out” policy. They can install racks of servers and capacity upfront and then only have to stop by every couple months with a remote team to swap things out. Churning away with power from your community and tax breaks but no workers to deal with. It’s already a thing.

Are there true electronic only voting machines in use? At least in my county, you go to one machine, pick out your choices, it prints out a slip with your choices (in plain English) and barcodes. You then go feed it into another system that scans it to record it and puts it into a locked box.

If a recount is ever called you have a paper copy with the actual names that were voted for.

This is why I am amassing a library of games and media that can all be consumed locally. The day that becomes the default is the day I stop paying for any of that. I don’t need “the new thing” or “you must watch this”. I have plenty of stuff to keep me entertained till the end of time.

I had a TI-99/4A and backed up games that in input manually from a magazine, on to a cassette tape. My tape recorder had a counter so that you could put multiple programs on a single tape. The fun part was if you forgot to reset the counter or the tape wasn’t rewound to zero you could get half of one program plus half of another.

When did I say either one was good. Re-read my original comment. My point was for independent power, not just switching from one “master” to another. It would do good for both China and the US to lose their soft power and have a more level shift of independence among nations.

Physical destruction isn’t the only measurement. What has China done to the Uyghurs? More damage than a bomb there. What about Tibetans? Tienamen Square? There is also their indirect support Russia and that definitely does involve bombs. You can’t just brush it off because “they’re not directly dropping them”. Just because it’s not “shock and awe” doesn’t mean there isn’t death and oppression.

I think their broader point was “it’s good till it isnt”. It feels like you’re looking at China as a savior. When instead it’s a “Oh, I wouldn’t say you’re free… more like under new management” scenario. They’re good till they aren’t, as we’ve seen with Taiwan.

As much as globalization has connected us, we need to still focus on independent sustainability. Does that mean there becomes a lot of redundancies and costs, yes, but it also grants better independence as we’re clearly seeing what happens when a large power turns evil.

Not every admin has the time or skill to curate. As long as the dev is open about it and there are configurable features to disable it, I don’t see what the issue is. Ultimately it creates no difference for a user if the admin creates it or the Dev does as long as it’s communicated.

The advantage of the fediverse is “don’t like it, go to another instance or build your own”, not to tell devs what they can and can’t do. Hell I never even interacted with Tesseract since I use a different client and an open instance.

I can’t tell you the number of devs I’ve met that know jack shit about infrastructure and networking. Even simple questions like understanding their subnet or how a load balancer works.

It’s an ARM based processor, which would be fine for Linux, but they keep mentioning Microsoft and Windows. Microsoft already tried an ARM approach but it failed because it had a very limited software set.

Unlike Linux, almost all binaries are compiled for x86, not ARM. So companies would either have to supply their source code to compile on install, or compile ARM binaries in advance, which I don’t see a lot doing.

Edit: they could also try x86 emulation, which would be even worse and would have its own compatibility and performance issues.
