“The data we share is navigational data used to make sidewalks safer for all users,” the Coco spokesperson continued. “For example, we provide real-time sidewalk hazard information to BlindSquare, a navigation app built for people who are blind or have low vision. …"

It’s always for someone’s safety, for fuck’s sake, even if doesn’t make any sense. Always some vile argument that, when refuted, makes you the inconsiderate person who doesn’t think of others’ safety.

Very surprised to read about blind people being the excuse this time, not children.

quite a few marginalized people do actually support these services, and will absolutely have their voices heard in their support if regulation starts knocking (if).

it’s a testament to how badly we’ve failed them as a society that their only use is as cannon fodder for capitalists, and that’s still better than what we’re offering them.

Has anyone thought that these robots wouldn’t do that?

Has anyone (except EU) a law that forbids that?

and if they ever get caught scanning faces in europe it was totally by mistake and they will absolutely delete that data, for sure!

edit: and by “getting caught” i mean there will be a leak where they’ll then find that data but by that point everybody already has the leaked data-set

How much you want to bet they also scan frequencies and log all electronics and such in an area?

There is no question, it’s silicon valley, there are no guardrails, no regulations to speak of. Worst case for them they have to give the feds a cut after the justice department lets them not admit fault.

And eventually the companies behind them will get sued and have to pay about threefiddy in damages.
