I recently bought a used 10tb hard drive for $190.
It’s decently affordable, look it up.

I get the sentiment, and it has some merit, but when we think of the children, we need to think of all of them. Will inaction here hurt more children, and people overall, in other places?

I wonder what they’re gonna do now, between a rock and a hard place.
They need to remain Trump sycophants while also accounting for Democratic Congress.
If the latter really push forward, billionaires will get into some very precarious position.

It’s of just Musk, it’s billionaires as a whole. One may have very hard time not buying anything from them while still surviving.

Loud and clear!

In other words, 1G of RAM accounts for 32$?

I’m currently building a passively cooled laptop Ryzen server with 32gb DDR4 RAM for less money. It is, like, TEN TIMES more powerful, and draws maybe 3x of Pi power consumption in peak loads, and is just as quiet and out of the way. Oh, and 1tb SSD is included in price calculations.
Times make us get creative with the tools we have.

In fairness, it can combine existing information in a way no person thought to, which is large part of working as a scientist.
It can be a powerful interdisciplinary connector, covering the blind spots of human science. Not many people can be knowledgeable in several frontier fields at once. AI can, so it will definitely help. But yes, verifying output is essential.

If you mean Raspberry Pi specifically, it’s extremely overpriced and there are way better alternatives for a much better price. Orange Pi is the first that comes to mind due to naming, but there are also many more.
If you mean hardware overall, look into the used market. Older systems are perfectly fine for hobbyist/home server applications, you can find/build a cheap computer that will serve you well. From someone who is utterly broke - this is very much still possible.
What truly sucks is gaming, LLMs and other hardware-demanding applications. There you do need fancy hardware, and it will cost you a kidney or two. This is where things get very grim.
It’s very simple, really.
We want government because it helps manage infrastructure, distribute wealth (sometimes), provide social services, offer protection and peace, and for all these benefits, we grumpily get to accept state monopoly on violence
They want government because it’s violent, and for that they grumpily get to accept building infrastructure, providing social services, distributing wealth, offering protection and peace. They really, really want for the government to only be violent and do nothing else.

Thanks for sharing.
In that sense, I like the idea brought by one of the commenters to make BOINC-like decentralized computing network that would utilize idle hardware on people’s computers. This can be tailored for LLMs, too.
This way, everyone could access the technology without having to pay billionaires and without all that datacenter buildout, and the people-owned hardware would be put to good use.

I mean, he has a point. Hardware is used way more efficiently in the data center, and any sort of deficit is best resolved in a centralized system due to more efficient resource allocation. The same setup could be used like 2 hours a day for your personal needs, or 24 hours a day to serve many people.
THAT SAID, their greed and unsatiable desire to make the number go up by hooking us into subscription economy with ever rising costs is what led us here and it leaves us with little choice but to accept the less efficient way and host these things ourselves.
Remember the times not so long ago when self-hosting was an enthusiast hobby instead of necessity? Barely anyone non-geeky bothered with it, because what existed served people well. Now, having to build our own services remains the only sane choice, and the only way out of the nightmare Sam, among others, has built with his own hands.

True, but:

Regular Firefox, too
An…interesting approach to noise-proofing your system :D

Bazzite would honestly be my newbie recommendation nowadays. The only immutable distro I didn’t have much issues with.
Oh, thanks for details! Missed that.
