In my company some of the top users spend over $3000/m. $29 is maybe 30 mins - 1 hour continuous running for a *medium" sized model like Sonnet. Not sure about cheaper models.

Not exactly a windfall
Late last month, plaintiff Alek Schott of Houston was awarded $76, one dollar for each minute that he was detained. (Schott asked for this exact amount as symbolic compensation.)
“Money was never what mattered,” his lawyers said. “This was and has always been about the Constitution. IJ will now ask the court to enjoin Bexar County from using baseless traffic stops as a tool for warrantless searches, and will work to enforce the precedent across the state.”
Ah, fair.
Worth a read. The nonsense he went through is bizarre.

“It’s little comfort to know that my stupidity is what brings us together this afternoon,” New Mexico attorney Stephen D. Aarons said in a hearing last month before five judges. He “assumed” ChatGPT would generate a “bulletproof summary of proceedings.” Instead, ChatGPT generated false testimony from “wholly fabricated witnesses,” according to an order of direct contempt from the New Mexico Supreme Court.
Aarons’ reasoning for trusting ChatGPT, he said in the August hearing, was that he’d heard of doctors using AI for medical research.

Why the hell would you give a language model the wheel of a car?
They don’t even understand the concept of time and space. Some of them can parse an image, but typically only enough to pull text from it, and extremely slowly.
It’s like asking an overweight English teacher to play pro football.
We built visual recognition machine learning systems for this purpose.

I’ve been doing this for around 10 years, have very hot, steamy showers and never had a problem 🤷
Started with the Samsung Galaxy S7, one of the earlier water resistant phones, and I’ve been doing it ever since, across maybe 5 phones, almost every day. You’ll be fine. If you are worried about drops, just use a decent case.
As for why, others have said, it’s to keep listening to my YouTube video essays and similar. Stuff that doesn’t need to be seen to be appreciated.

I got some 16TB drives recently for around $200 each, though they were manufacturer recertified. Usually a recertified drive will save you 20-40%. Shipping can be a fortune though.
EDIT: I used manufacturer recertified, not refurbished drives.
Just looked and yeah, not far off when you buy new. An old PC with a couple of hard drives can do the trick, but obviously it’s more work to set up.
The used and refurb market is your friend.
For large capacity refurb enterprise-grade drives, I recommend serverpartdeals
I’ve had some good 16TB drives from there for a good few years and still kicking. They can be a little loud though. You can get 10TB drives for maybe €250.
A Synology 4-bay NAS can be bought second hand from eBay for about €200-€300. They aren’t very powerful but might be fine for Immich and pretty easy to use. Many come with some hard drives you can pawn off or get started with using a RAID config that means if one or two die you are fine. If the drives are second hand (not pro refurb) though do not pay more than 30% of retail price because who knows how long they will last.
Photos don’t take up that much space. Even 100 000 photos tends to take up less than 500GB. Video is much heavier, so if you’re a videographer you may struggle without reencoding.
