In theory. I’ve seen firsthand the number of arguments about what constitutes notability and reliable sources. It’s not for nothing that this is the biggest divide among Wikipedia editors.

Self promotion is a different rule that exists. Also, their threshold for what constitutes ‘notability’ is ridiculously arbitrary and bureaucratic, or at least it was in the past. I doubt it’s changed.

No idea why you’re being downvoted, it’s quite obvious the majority of users aren’t contributing financially to the free services and products they use.

The donation model works for a very few groups, but for the vast majority of OSS and freehosted projects, donations are nowhere close to covering costs.
Even lemmy.world is viable because they only count server costs, and are volunteer run. If they had to cover staffing costs, it would be untenable.

Don’t have any sources, but I feel like I’ve seen that model before and it doesn’t seem to have worked so far for most people.

Lack of funds, essentially. For all we hate corporatised Internet services, we really suck at funding alternatives.
This is an ongoing problem, we need to figure out a way to make these services sustainable. The donation model obviously isn’t cutting it.

‘date+123’ would be an algorithm based on the date. Given non techie users, it was probably something like that.

I did have mine up and running in windows some years ago before I switched my daily driver, yes.

Could you explain WHY you don’t think it could work? ‘Selfish turds’ is a bit too generic to give an answer to.

You’d have to believe him in the first place. Do you?

And others are actual gems. They’re not mutually exclusive. It’s ok to point out the problems while also acknowledging there’s actual accomplishments.

The point is, there are plenty of mathematicians who have looked at some of the output and been impressed by it. Contrast that with the comments in here that are almost universally negative. One might think there was an unreasonable bias in our little echo chamber.

Yeah but I wish the crowd on lemmy would be a little less reddity and actually read the articles.

But for all the slop and uncertainty, the overarching consensus is that the release contains some genuinely impressive work. While stressing the difficulties assessing the volume of material — and the need to properly verify the results — numerous researchers The Verge spoke to said the work appeared to be of a very high caliber, despite shortcomings in its presentation. In a pre-AI world, they said, many of OpenAI’s results would clearly have warranted publication in top-tier journals and could have been enough to secure an academic career for their authors. A handful were described as being the kind of work that could make a mathematician a serious contender for a Fields Medal, one of the discipline’s highest honors.
While some of it is slop, there appear to be genuine gems in there.
I feel like most of the commentors here didn’t even bother reading the article. It’s insane how so many of the mathematicians cited in the article are excited or anxious about developments, and most of the people in here are just declaring more AI slop.

mistake Star Trek for Star Wars or something.
One’s got space magicians and the others got space wizards

Yeah but as per the post, windows menu is taking forever to open…

Well you have to be typing it somewhere

On Linux, I can pull up the system menu, type in a few letters of what I want to launch, and hit enter to get it started in less than 2 seconds, without having to open or switch windows to a terminal. Done right, there’s nothing wrong with menus.
Eh. They’ve got a history out the ass of being rude shits, you’re just the latest. Block them and move on.
