  • Yeah, same. Earlier this year I thought “Hey, people seem to love auto tagging with MB, Picard, Beets. I should try it.”

But that was short lived. I don’t want release information outside of artists, titles, albums, year. I just have no need for it. I know how to get what I want from mp3tag.

I am looking at using Beets to keep things clean, maybe find missing artwork, and fetch lyrics. But the vital information I’ll keep reviewing.

I haven’t ever gotten comfortable with how Picard works, but I’ll check out QL. Thanks!

  • Not quite server related, but in the middle of a workday this week, I decided I was done with Windows on my home PC. Installed Zorin OS and things have been going really well. Any issues I’ve had have been really minor and mostly revolve around me being picky about theming.

I haven’t found a native mp3 tagger that makes sense to me yet, so I just installed Mp3tag. I’m open to suggestions on that front.

On the server side, it’s mostly just keeping on. A friend has me considering Home Assistant, I just don’t know if the value is there for me. I need to do some housekeeping today and update and clean up unused containers.

  • Just based on my own experience with my wife and kids, it’s the whole “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink” thing. While I have services running for photo & file storage, books, music, and video (plus a Proton family plan and several other services), the only thing my family uses is Jellyfin.

I’ve mostly given up now. I keep everything up because I use it all and love working on it. Maybe one day they’ll express some concern with privacy or ownership, and then I can pounce. But people need to be ready to move.

  • I’ve gone back and forth on this, but ultimately, I enjoy the tagging process and accept it as part of my workflow.

When i’m adding a release to my collection, I throw it into a temo directory, open the album folder in MP3Tag, query MusicBrainz (or Discogs if necessary) for the basics, replace the cover image if I’m not happy with the one from the source, add additional genre tags and do cleanup, auto renumber tracks/discs. Once it all looks good, I use the tags-to-filename feature to rename everything to AlbumArtist/[OriginalYear] Album/### - Title (### - Artist - Title for multi artist releases) then copy it to my library.

It sounds like a lot, but it isn’t bad. Like I said, I enjoy it.

Updating tags shouldn’t change the actual music though. That seems really strange and like something else is going on.
