Nope, I just don’t think humanity has learned everything there is to know, that carbon chemistry is required for sentience (and even if there was, that it couldn’t be incorporated into a computer), or that there is some mystical thing some people refer to as the soul.
We can build different kinds of machines.
So if soil and cow patties aren’t sentient, yet people are, you’re acknowledging that the substrate doesn’t determine the capability, but more how it’s arranged?
Until the Wright brothers came along, most people thought heavier-than-air powered flight wasn’t possible. Less than 70 years later, people were walking on the moon. 4 million years ago, there wasn’t anything capable of building either of those things, even though there is good evidence creatures back then had creativity, dreams, and ingenuity. Assuming things can’t advance further is either hubris or abject ignorance.
Linus is 56. You think he’ll still be actively maintaining Linux into his mid-70s?
Commercial products can’t do this from a business case level. There are ways you can achieve this on a technical level, but it is very much DIY at this point. I hope to slowly implement this over the next while until I have a system that works for me, uses no cloud or corporate servers, and is possibly accessible from outside my home (that’s a security challenge and I may not be up to it).
Upvoted because more people need this inflicted upon them.
No, for two reasons. First, there are already two Steve Apples, from the same time, no less. Second, because we don’t really want one of those Steves back. Great marketer, shit person.
As someone whose favorite pastime is gaming, feet are only required for work.
Win2k was the NT line, which was generally more stable than the main Windows line, but couldn’t play games well and didn’t have any real consumer penetration. WinNT 3.1, 3.5, 3.51, 4, then Win2k (the first server version to not use standard version numbers), then WinXP, which was the version that merged the home and workstation/server lines, but also continued the home version tradition of sucking badly every other version. Vista, 8, and now 11 fall into that list.
I did use 2k back in the day and while it wasn’t as good as XP, it was a serviceable work platform. Don’t ask me about any issues on the server side, I did very little with that.
Win98 was trash, which is why Win98SE was a free upgrade. Now you may have meant SE, but those are distinctly different versions, which is required to follow the rule of every other OS release being trash. SE was followed by ME (trash, recommended daily reboot), followed by XP (good, merging of the NT and old windows line, still able to play most games with the compatibility layer, 3 GB Memory addressing, etc.).
This is the thing - with advanced systems, which they should all be now, context can drive behavior.
Yeah, me being sure Blender had been open source since forever ago made me open the article. Now I have to get out of the basement and bathe.
