  • I think tax avoidance schemes like that should result in basically exile. You don’t want to pay your fair share to participate in society? Ok, enjoy no society. Not even jail. Just drop them in international waters. Sorry, food requires roads to be able to transport and those use taxes, so since you don’t want to pay your share of taxes you don’t get the privilege of anything they supply. Just the one free transport and confiscation of everything else since you don’t exist as a person in society.

That’s probably a little harsh, but I am just over theses people. What ever happened with the Panama papers? Oh, that’s right, nothing. They are ruining society for everyone else and there is just no recourse.

  • I buy handicrafts as gifts quite a lot. As someone who does handicrafts I have a deep appreciation for the artists/artisans who work on those. As you guessed I also regularly buy/gift video games and almost exclusively indie titles. I also regularly rent books from the library and probably buy one every month or two to have to loan out or as a gift. I have commissioned two original pieces from traditional artists but have received neither. One I did get an (incomplete) refund for. I imagine my experience isn’t the norm, though I’m sure I’m not alone.

The fact that they act like being vocally against AI isn’t helping their cause is idiotic. Even if I had done none of the above, the sentiment that AI art “doesn’t count” will definitely discourage people who are interested in flaunting their acquired art from viewing AI art as a suitable replacement.

  • I think a lot of these companies let go of team leads and just decided they could do without. They had the biggest salaries and likely no respect from the higher ups. In my experience with big projects this position is extremely important because it keeps the team on task and they are able to coordinate with other team leads. If you just have a handful of junior employees, they may be doing work, but it’s not actually moving the project forward. Often time these leads are still doing code review or even writing code (or the equivalent work product in their division), so it’s not like they’re just in meetings all day. They actually know and do the work, but they’re able to keep the group organized. I’m guessing those are the positions they’re rehiring.

The hyperlinked article in that section goes into a little more detail, but I’m guessing based off what I’ve been hearing from the industry.

  • Had an emergency with a pet while traveling recently. The nearest open emergency vet had a sign in the exam room stating that the visit is recorded. No mention anywhere else. No form. At this point you’ve already driven there, paid an upfront amount/put a card on file, waited potentially an hour or more with a pet in an emergency situation, and are finally seeing a vet. Are you going to say anything at that point and potentially risk getting worse care? I can tell you as someone who cares about privacy I just let it happen. I wrote a review and called around to other places so I know for next time I’m in that area. I know it’s different for vets vs people, but I was very upset about that situation. I can only imagine how frustrating it would be if it came to the data of yourself or your child.

I had to see a specialist for something and they used one of the platforms mentioned in the article. There was no way to not use it. You could opt out of some things, but they said that’s how they provide information and communicate with patients so you had to make an account and do payment and schedule through that system. I sure thought I opted out of the data sharing, but I’m going to check later today what I’m actually opted out of vs what I thought I was.

  • I think this is suggesting that all AI models have restrictions. Yes, some people will ignore those restrictions, but at least there will be some recourse as there will be actual rules put in place. If a company or an individual does something reckless with AI that affects another company or individual negatively the offender may be able to currently say “it wasn’t me it was the AI/I didn’t know”. They may not have technically broken any rules since the current law is not able to account for AI agents acting somewhat autonomously. If there are rules in place then at least we can point to that and say “it doesn’t matter that you did not explicitly instruct it to do X, you should have had the following things in place to prevent that”.

The fact that some people may be able to run local models and may never be caught does not mean that we shouldn’t have the infrastructure in place to stop the harm where and when we can.
