  • More of a ‘if I don’t use this for a week, I’ll see new things’. If I log in after 2 or 3 days, I’ll scroll for 10 minutes and see the stuff I saw last time.

I had this exact experience. The solution? Just loud subscribe to stuff and now I have 80 notifications a day about new posts which I struggle to keep up with. Clearly the fediverse isn’t as inactive as I had the impression from just browsing it.

The captchas on Lemmy are AWFUL, I can’t do them either.

Do all Lemmy frontends use those captchas? Might be a reason to recommend a different one by default.

I do have to say, I bounced off Lemmy and Piefed mostly due to their UI and UX. I probably wouldn’t have joined the fediverse if I didn’t come across a kbin.social recommendation back then. Mbin is much more up my alley, though not ideal either, but it has worked out for me so far.

  • I do have to disagree with this post, I think it’s you who need more research if you really think that kickstarter suggests they haven’t heard of the fediverse.

Haven: Better Instagram & YouTube, to Stop AI & Surveillance Social media that prevents Big Tech & AI from stealing your art, your biometrics, and your privacy. We’re replacing Insta and YouTube.

The fediverse does NOT prevent big tech and ai from stealing your stuff. it actually makes it easier. They just need a shell instance to subscribe to stuff and the fediverse hands everything to them for free, including your votes.

I’m all for the fediverse myself, but that’s because I don’t personally care about this that much. If I did, I wouldn’t want to be here where we’re the most vulnerable out of anywhere.

  • Sorry, I think I’m just blind. I tried a non piefed.social post earlier today and didn’t see it in the JSON, but checking a piefed.social post now, the property is there. So either I just didn’t see it the first time around, or the instance I tried it with wasn’t the best example to use.

Anyway, deleted my comment. But then OP’s post confuses me again, because there really shouldn’t be a DDoS happening toward the small site. The instance hosting the thumbnail sure, but not the site that’s being linked to.

  • I just took this random post from my frontpage: https://sh.itjust.works/post/68605733 and made a manual request for the federated JSON-LD.

      }

Yes the image itself isn’t sent over (iirc they never are?), but it’s stored on sh.itjust.works. Other instances grab it from there, not the website the post links to.

I did notice just now though that some Lemmy instances seem to just proxy the image through their servers, which I assume is to avoid CORS. But that’s an instance choice, not a general fediverse issue.

Mbin does the same as Lemmy, but it also includes the image in the attachment property. Probably for compatibility with some other platform.

One thing I didn’t notice before was that you’re using Piefed. That’s the one software I didn’t check before writing my previous comment. It does seem like Piefed is the outlier here. I tried a post from piefed.ca and the image is nowhere to be seen. The image property is not present, it’s not in the attachment array, and I can’t see any other property that contains it.

Edit: A piefed.social post I just tried did have an image, so I assume I’m just blind.

  • I don’t really get it. The image is federated, there’s no need for instances to refetch it. Just checked out some posts and indeed it’s there, in the image property. With the URL pointing to the Lemmy instance.

So if this is actually an issue, that’s just bad programming and needs to be fixed.

Edit: didn’t notice OP uses Piefed. Unlike Lemmy and Mbin, it seems like Piefed doesn’t federate it.

Edit: actually I’m blind, Piefed does federate it too, sorry piefed

  • I tried signing up to try answering some of the unanswered Mbin questions, but it’s telling me it can’t confirm my account. I double checked the handle, tried with and without the @ in front, copied it directly from my profile, and I tried using webfinger manually to see if it replies with cloudflare (it doesn’t). This happens with both the private message and profile code options.

Not sure if others using Mbin have the same issue or if it’s the instance. What does it actually check to confirm the account (before sending the private message or giving me the code to put on the profile)? It doesn’t seem to be a simple webfinger lookup.

  • so maybe that active user count above is something like weekly active

Every instance provides its MAU publically on request, but there’s no centralized server they all send their MAU to proactively. Third party websites trying to display an overall MAU have to manually check instances, for which they need to be aware of them to. Then add up the numbers.

As a result, different sites can display different MAU because they’re aware of and checking different instances.

There’s no weekly active users provided by instances, so I really doubt it’s that. Instances only provide monthly and half year numbers.

  • That change helped reduce scraping and automated abuse, but still allowed any logged-in account to access Old Reddit, including accounts with no prior Old Reddit use.

To close this gap, in the next few months, we’ll further limit access for logged-in users to only those who have used Old Reddit in the last six months

How horrible, ANY logged-in account can just access old reddit?? That needs to be fixed asap, how dare new users just use old reddit when they have a perfectly good shreddit available to them. — Reddit admins apparently

Nice admission there. Didn’t expect them to be this open about their true feelings on the matter.
