Moved over from Reddit after the API debacle. Most interested in news communities, while being in favor of popular self-determination and against the use and propagation of generative AI.

  • When accounting for all defederations between all instances with at least 50 MAU (as of when I last checked in August, at least), the only instances that are defederated with over 5% of other Threadiverse users (inbound or outbound) are lemmygrad.ml, hexbear.net, fedinsfw.app, forum.guncadindex.social, and lemmy.1095.me, none of which are oriented towards the average user moving over from Reddit anyhow.

Less defederation on average is better, but defederation is not a huge problem as it stands, particularly if you pick an instance known to use it minimally such as lemmy/piefed.zip.

  • Reddit continues to be the biggest hurdle to Lemmy’s growth; the average person doesn’t care about how much private companies profit off of their personal data, so convincing them to leave the vastly bigger platform for Lemmy is a challenge.

Completely ignoring Reddit and its potential user migration opportunities would be dooming the Threadiverse to not gaining any new users from the most likely place those users would be.

  • I don’t like Fandom as a commercial platform any more than you do, but in-universe topics for niche fandoms simply don’t belong on Wikipedia; they would make it harder for editors to focus copyediting time on articles that matter far more to most people.

There are nonprofit wiki farm alternatives to Fandom that are a better solution to that problem.

  • Because an encyclopedia with millions of promotional articles would lose not only its objectivity, but also crater the standard of quality of the average Wikipedia article.

The Cebuano Wikipedia is the poster child of a project expanding beyond its scope: millions of articles generated by a bot with no one there to edit them after they’re created.

  • fediverse, decentralized group of social media platforms in which each independent platform can interact freely with any other platform that is part of the group.

Great that they have an article on it, though their formatting the start of each article like a dictionary entry is a bit odd compared to Wikipedia.

If it were a Wikipedia article, it would probably need some copyediting to give it a more encyclopedic tone along with in-line citations.

  • A feature that Piefed has that I wish Lemmy would implement too is URL filters; perhaps it could be added to the chart after ‘word filters’?

Arctic has a great frontend implementation of it with Regex support, but the app hasn’t been updated in a while.

Also, for simplicity perhaps the tables should have the more advanced information implemented with a visibility toggle? All of the information listed may overwhelm new users and leave an impression that the Fediverse is particularly complex.
