Progenitor of the Weird Knife Wednesday feature column. Is “column” the right word?

I make knives now, too. Why not buy one at flightlessforge.com?

  • The ludicrously stupid claim that this is the “first” flying car is trivially disprovable by a two second internet search. Elmo missed it by nearly a century, although it really shouldn’t surprise anyone at this point to learn that he’s lying through his teeth basically every time he opens his mouth. Apparently there are still a couple of people in the world who have learned nothing from the results of his other product announcements including but not limited to “self driving by next year” for the last decade, “bulletproof” glass that can’t stop a baseball, and “you’ll be able to use your Tesla as a robo-taxi and have it make money for you on the side.” These few credulous individuals must exist, because otherwise we wouldn’t keep giving him press.

Forgive me if I start sounding like Thunderfoot, here, but where’s everybody’s 2nd gen Roadster, asshole? Have you refunded those preorders yet? You can’t even manufacture the cars you promised everybody that would only go along on the ground.

I suspect the real reason that there was nobody in that car is because it was a prop, stripped out barely functional shell to save weight.

  • You can extract the chip’s serial number in software trivially. In Windows, from a commandline:

    wmic cpu get pricessorid

I’m positive you can do the same with some Linux command, and failing that certainly with basically every vaguely modern benchmarking tool. Same deal with hard drives and probably also video cards. My BIOS/UEFI even enumerates all my connected hard drive serial numbers on screen if I interrupt its graphical boot screen.

Given that the anti-cheat schemes these competitive games are literal rootkits, I don’t think gathering the user’s hardware serial numbers in order to attempt identify them is much of a stretch.
