  • For the record, nowhere in this conversation did I say that I think people should move. You’re putting words in my mouth. I’ve only ever spoken about myself and my own plans.

That clarified, I do think people should not support a company with leadership like Proton’s.

You do not need a perfect or “better” (subjective) alternative to leave Proton. If you are not willing to accept an inconvenience for a moral stance, then it is no moral stance at all.

Just because I do not personally yet know what I will be switching to does not at all undermine my position. I do not think you are carrying on this conversation in good faith, so I’m going to end it here.

Can’t answer the license stuff, but I’ve been using Docmost with a group of six other friends for about a year now and have enjoyed it. Mildly annoyed about some features locked on my fully self hosted and private instance but hasn’t been enough of an annoyance that I’ve cared to look for an alternative. We use it pretty regularly.

My actual biggest complaint is I made a feature suggestion a long time ago which someome was very kind enough to program and add a pull request, but the maintainer refuses to implement. Oh well.

  • I’m not opposed to the concept of smart appliances. Getting a phone notification when my load of laundry is done. Remotely starting the oven preheat. Having the humidifier interact with the thermostat automatically. Blinds that open on a schedule to gently wake you with natural light.

For the record, I don’t have any of these things, but I like the ideas of them. It’s the kind of stuff I was wide eyed and hopeful about as a sci fi loving kid.

The problem with ask these things is not the connectivity ideas, imho; it’s pretty much capitalism. These things can’t exist in a way that doesn’t also spy on you, build a profile that knows you better than yourself, and sells every last morsel of information to not just the highest bidder, but every bidder.

And to be clear, I don’t mean can’t on a technical level.
