  • When the lawnmower was invented in 1830 it created the unrealistic expectation that all well-heeled properties have carefully manicured lawns with flat cut grass. Suddenly even people who had no desire or interest in gardening were expected to own lawn tools and do yard work to adhere to the new expectation. That expectation spread across the world and now lawnmowers and yard tools are a multi-billion dollar industry that consumes everyone’s time for no good reason. It’s just part of human culture now. Every year all the supposedly intelligent, free-willed humanoids living on Earth dedicate their scant time, wealth, and resources to cut weeds near their domiciles only because it is expected of them. It accomplishes no positive benefit. It is a net waste of time and energy. It is a purely harmful thing to do. But if you ask anyone about it, they will initially be convinced it’s a good thing because they don’t actually think about it with logic. They just keep doing it because for the past 200 years we have all been doing it.

It’s very possible AI will turn out to be a similar thing.

  • The USA sixth amendment has the confrontation clause, which gives the accused the right to face their accuser in court. If this were to happen here then we shouldn’t have to play their games and hand over more of our personal information. We should be able to take the company to court for slander - they have accused us of a crime - and we should demand they present that evidence in court to justify that slander. Either they submit the evidence - allowing the accused to disprove it - or they don’t present the evidence and the accused wins their slander case against the company.

That’s how it should work. I don’t know WTF the judicial system is going to do with AI lobbing criminal accusations at people. Maybe we end up living in a perpetual panopticon where AI is studying us every second of every day looking for some way to charge us with a crime.

  • When the smart car was released in the USA there was a 1 year waiting list because so many people wanted a cheap $7,000 car that they sold out everywhere. Then they stopped making small economy cars and forced the SUV down our throats.

People absolutely would buy a cheap economy car in the USA. There is sky-high demand. It’s just not fulfilled because our auto industry is a racket and they know that if only crazy expensive cars are sold in the USA people will have no choice but to buy them. Transportation is a need, not a luxury. It’s like pricing water at $100 a bottle when everyone lives in the desert and your $100 water is the only water.

  • I remember Deepseek suddenly being much more advanced than the USA LLM’s. The Chinese aren’t trying to bake censorship and refusal algorithms into their LLM and thus are making much more rapid progress, and I think this is just the USA AI bros throwing a temper tantrum about it.

I went to college for IT and learned windows server. One of the things my professor told me is “if you build the monster, you must feed the monster” and that’s in regards to admins trying to set up complicated security systems to prevent their users from doing stupid things. Yes you can do that, but it wastes your time and causes you headaches. That’s sort of what the USA AI bros are dealing with right now.

Anyone running LLM at home on their own hardware is downloading the abliterated models that don’t refuse your requests. So what are the USA AI bros actually accomplishing by baking censorship into all their latest LLM’s? They aren’t censoring anyone except the novice users who don’t know how to run LM studio at home. And they’re giving China the easy victory.
