Hopefully this is a fit for this community (for getting value out of a self-hosted RSS aggregator/reader).
I’m looking for a list of high-value feeds to subscribe to or some alternative ideas to use RSS for in $current_year such as subscribing to a youtube channel without being logged in/directly using the frontend.
Apart from the other things people mentioned here, I recently deployed pinchflat-ngx: it subscribes to youtube channels and produces an RSS feed of videos it downloaded. I had issues with the using the RSS feed from youtube directly - it appears to break more often than not. That pinchflat feed I use in my miniflux instance.
I have been selfhosting miniflux, and using Capy Reader on Android. Been using this for almost two years now. It’s been great.
Mostly use it for news and blogs. But I follow some lemmy community and mastodon feeds with this as well. Anything with an RSS feed can be followed.
i love capy reader
$current_year???
Im glad someone else noticed that
The one non-obvious thing that I use RSS for is to monitor releases on GitHub, so that when I’m waiting for some project to release some bugfix it gets conveniently listed in my RSS reader.
I quickly wiped up a little tool to automate this on my RSS feed it could maybe be useful to you if you use docker 😘 https://github.com/P6g9YHK6/DockFeed
youtube channels, blogs, news, software releases, etc
i use freshrss. allows me to sub to websites that don’t have rss/atom by parsing html.
i use reeder classic on ios and easyrss on android
I use it for a lot of the same things folks have already said. Following news (Google News does RSS), some tech blogs, news releases for the things I’m invested in, some GitHub releases, the Lemmy communities I subscribe to (including this one), etc. I still kinda follow RSS feeds on Reddit, but that’s probably dead in a week. I’ve also used RSS-Bridge to build feeds for things that don’t automatically come with one, like some things on Lemmy that I wish did.
My best strategy has been to use Lemmy, and then if I liked a post shared here, I would check if that post came from a site with an RSS feed.
I’ve also been reading posts on bubbles.town and finding lots of fun niche little blogs to subscribe to. Bubbles has its own RSS feeds, too, sharing the highest-voted posts.
Also, more relevant to this community, I’m watching feeds for releases for most of the software I’m running.
RSS for in $current_year such as subscribing to a youtube channel without being logged in/directly using the frontend.
I use RSS to subscribe to my favorite channels on invidious. https://invidious.io/
Today‘s Top Tune from KCRW via gPodder
I used to have it get a digest of reddit posts from my subscribed subreddits, so that I could still get the stuff not posted elsewhere, without actually going to reddit.
Same here, womp womp
PieFed makes a RSS feed like that, look for “Posts from joined communities” in the sidebar of the home page.
Metric f ton of comics.
Do you have a good source for mangas? My usual solution starts to fall apart a little and I was wondering if there’s somewhere I can monitor via RSS and then just torrent the results to my book server
sub to the security list of any software you are hosting or care about.
eg my ${DAY_JOB} is drupal so i sub to https://www.drupal.org/security/all/rss.xml
Google Reader ---->. Feedly and stopped there. from a variety of news sites and blogs.
I mostly use it to digest news, webcomics, and free video games.
I glance at The War Zone occasionally (twz.com) to see if there’s anything interesting and worth posting here on the Threadiverse.
